Why emotional neglect and abuse often are not recognized
Many people believe that they had a normal childhood without trauma, because there was nothing in particular that could be named as trauma or abuse: like there was no war, the children were not beaten up, there was no sexual abuse. They grew up in a normal house, there was good food, they were dressed well, and went to school… so in material aspects everything was taken care of. They went to the doctor if needed, their parents did bring them to school, to sport, the family went on holidays…. so what could be wrong? But that does not mean that there was no emotional abuse or neglect. Emotional abuse and neglect often are invisible, but the pain of it is there.
